Telescoping Flagpole Flaws Exposed

E-mail Print PDF

The Truth about Telescoping Flagpoles from the eyes of a reseller.

Telescoping Flagpoles have features and a design that seem desirable, however, as a reseller we cringe at the thought of selling the pole to the wrong customer. The fact is that this pole is not right for everyone, and generally not most flag fliers.

First of all, it is a pole designed for convenience of transport. It is easy to take to trade shows, tailgate parties or on vacation. When used for these purposes one can hardly think of a better pole.

However, when used for everyday flying, its limitations and flaws become quickly apparent. You have to be in good health and of a certain height or physical build to raise or lower the pole. If you meet these conditions then you know you will be able to operate the pole with “ease” as the manufacturers have coin the word.

Keep from getting trapped into a compulsion buy. Uncommon, Ladder Works, Sunsetter and Topflight has made it easy to do with something that travels so well. We will attempt to list the pros and cons of these poles from real live experience and based on our years of selling these poles.

Pros include:

1)      Pole travels easy.

2)      Sells for under $200 for the 16ft and 20ft models.

3)      Lightweight.

4)      No ropes.

5)      360 degree flag rotation.

6)      Can be used for changing locations; vacations, tailgate parties and trade shows.

Cons include:

1)      Limited strength.

2)      Limited height.

3)      Plastic components deteriorate.

4)      Push buttons wear.

5)      Requires healthy and certain physical attributes to operate.

6)      Vigilant observation to prevent damage from high winds.

What we believe. For a permanent install, to a consistent flag flier, who does not want the hassle and worry about wind conditions or what happens as their health fails, a architectural grade flagpole provides better dollar for dollar investment. The initial investment can be twice the amount. The pros for a traditional tapered aluminum flagpole far exceed the telescoping flagpole.

Typically the Glossary Link wall thickness and bottom diameter of the poles are greater than the telescoping flagpoles. While you do not want to take chances on high winds damaging your flagpole, the amount of strength gain from the larger diameter and wall thickness will exceed that of the telescoping flagpoles. You will be less likely to remove a flag on moderate windy days as the flagpole will not sway in the slightest of breezes.

It takes less effort to raise a flag with a rope than a telescoping flagpole. Rope wear just like the plastic components do on the telescoping flagpole, however replacement rope is available at your local hardware store.

If you ever want the option of flying oversized flags or multiple flags, and with less worries, prior planning and purchasing a flagpole designed for that use is a better investment of time and resources.
